Description

Carter County was the site of the first permanent settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains and south of the Ohio River. It formed the nucleus of future settlement in the West and Southwest. Originally settled in 1770 by a small band of pioneers from Yadkin, North Carolina, and soon followed by settlers from the western valley of southwestern Virginia, Carter County became a major migration center for further movement west.

Deaths for the years 1926 through 1934 were often of people who where first or second generation descendants of the original settlers. Data includes, when possible: place of birth, name spelling variations, and cause of death as it appears in the original record for the deceased; parents' names and place of birth; informant's name and place of residence; record numbers that correspond with the official death record numbers on file in the Tennessee State Archives. The every name index contains over 8,500 names.
